Visited at the end of March and there was still deep snow on the lake. 4 wheel drive is a must with snow.

*NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE EIELSON BASE ACCESS TO VISIT*

This is a cool piece of Air Force history located on Eielson AFB. The plane was decommissioned in the mid 1950s and stripped of parts. When not needed anymore, airmen were ordered to get rid of it. They placed it on a frozen lake in hopes it would sink when the ice melted.

When summer came around, it only partially sank. They used it for water egress training for awhile after that, but the plane was never relocated and still sits where it was left over 50 years ago.

To get there, follow the north road on Eielson until you see a sign pointing down a gravel road, can't miss it. Worth the quick visit if you have base access to see this interesting piece of history.

Beautiful little lake, though the lady definitely makes it more eerie, got to get the angle just right to see her nose. Yes you must be military or have a sponsor to get on base (do not try during covid-19 guests are not allowed) it is a Military artifact On a Military base same rules apply to all military bases.

Truly the highlight of visiting Eielson Air Force Base. It’s such an awesome sight to see and we actually have no idea why the plane is even there, only speculation of what base leadership was thinking at the time. The only downside is you’ll need to have base access. But you can get a tour through the public affairs office or if you know someone on base. It’s defiantly a must-see thing in the interior of Alaska.

You must be military or with someone in military to visit just a heads up. My husband and I visited in October. Lake was completely frozen over and we were able to walk out to the plane. Easily can get lost trying to find this location as maps doesn't make it easy. I'm sure the view is nicer in summer or when it's actually a lake not ice cube.

Cool little hidden spot on Eielson...came during the winter so the lake was frozen....tail sticking out is the only thing visible.

Serene...almost eerie. I wish her story was more elegant than what it was...but, a cool sight anyway!
