I spent a year at King Salmon in the mid '90's. We were out numbered by brown bears most of the time. The fishing and critter watching: bears; wolves; and eagles (bald and F-15's); etc. was fantastic. I hooked a King Salmon that jumped and landed a 36" Rainbow Trout. I never caught a legal size Rainbow, nothing that small.

We had one scrambled in the year I was there. A scramble the day after the F-15s left Galena....

People said, "King Salmon, fishing's the mission", but they were serious, dedicated, and focused.

Nice quiet auxiliary Air Force Station where the primary function is long range defense radar. Has 8 stalls in the Hanger for military aircraft. Occasionally used by the Air Force for practice. The very long Runway makes this location an important base for forward use by the Air Force if necessary.
