Avoid Michelle Burns at all costs! We needed our existing eight pages lease/contract terms to be reviewed. She asked for a 3K retaining fees, paid it same day and immediately received an invoice for $1200 with no explanation. We assumed she started looking into our case. When we followed up two weeks later, her respond was that we are not her only client, if we need immediate assistance we have to pay more for working after hours and stopped communicating on their portal. We called the office numerous times leaving messages with her assistant "Amy" . She called back a week later to apologize, and explained how busy she was with her cases and promised to have our lease ready that same day. Four days later she called to go over the lease terms that was sent to her three weeks earlier! On that phone call she advised us that we should expect another $400 because her time is worth $$ and we should have not hired a $400/hour attorney. We thought that was extremely unprofessional and rude coming from an attorney. Finally, two days after that conversation, $1600 and a month loss of rent we got our edited eight page lease back. Very disappointed, would never do business with her again!

It has taken me quite some time to process my divorce experience and I finally feel somewhat comfortable posting this review in hopes that no one else will endure what I did. I filed for divorce nearly 5 years ago after leaving a physically abusive marriage. I had video and photo proof of the violence and this firm failed to properly address that in my divorce proceedings. I was also advised NOT to ask for alimony after having to move half way across the country to flee my marriage as a now single, jobless mother. I was told that the judge would likely deny my alimony request. Looking back, this firm failed to represent and protect me and my children. They were looking to do the least amount of work for the full price. Do not make the same mistake I did and please find an attorney that will represent and advise you properly.

In response to their response: I would like to clarify some points to ensure accuracy. I was, in fact, a client of your firm, and my experience is consistent with what I described in my review.

While I understand that every divorce case is unique and subject to the complexities of the legal system, I feel that my concerns and the evidence I provided—specifically, the photo and video proof of abuse—were not handled with the care and attention they deserved. This evidence was a critical part of my case, and its exclusion significantly impacted the outcome for me and my children.

I also believe that the advice to forgo requesting alimony, particularly as a jobless single mother fleeing abuse, did not adequately consider the severity of my circumstances. Regardless of the likelihood of success in court, I was seeking representation that would advocate fully on my behalf, and I did not feel that this was provided.

I am sharing my experience to help others make informed decisions about their representation. While I appreciate your perspective, I hope this feedback is taken constructively to improve outcomes for future clients in similar situations

Hired an attorney, Laura Smith, for my wife's case. She gave us a discount on her retainer which was great due to our situation at that time. She also had a very kind and caring demeanor, which my wife felt was important. Laura stated that if we paid her initial retainer, and if the judge approved, that she would get her attorney fees paid by the opposing party. Nothing further was disclosed. No other fees or warnings were given.

The judge did approve this and we won our case. Months later, one person at the office was trying to collect money from us, while Laura stated that we wouldn't have to worry as they were collecting from opposing party.

Months later again, now Laura is stating we are responsible and reversing what we all originally agreed upon. Now she states we signed her fee arrangement, which is not viewable by us or been supplied to us per our requests. We have also received three very different bills stating vastly different amounts without explanation.

When we asked to see these documents and a correct version of an accurate bill, along with other very valid questions (like why this is completely different than what was discussed and agreed upon), we were told that we had a threatening tone and they would no longer work with us.

This was not the case, but mere valid questions. Of course, we were threatened both attorney and firm that we better pay or else.

This law firm has very deceptive tactics, horrible communication skills, and no integrity. They omit very vital information that should be disclosed to clients prior to. It is an absolute shame and disgrace to treat clients this way.

Laura Smith is just ANOTHER problem in the family law system...
