I can not begin to explain how awful this experience was. No communication. Only want money. Did not fight for any of my parental rights. Doc just names drops and boasts about himself in order to try and accomplish things. This husband and wife “team” is quite good at telling you everything will be ok, taking your money and then doing absolutely nothing when it comes to a hearing with a judge. Run as far as you can from these old con artists!!!

These people are crooks. Don’t waste a dime or any of your time with these two clowns. Doc is so busy boasting about himself and his accomplishments he does not have time to focus on the details of any case. If you care about time with your child or lawyers actually doing what they said they will do, most definitely pass on these incumbent morons. These two play the part well, but are out to rob you blind. Joanie and Doc are all the things wrong with this world, please don’t be had by their gimmicks.

They apeared to be a great fit at the beginning.

Soon after agreeing to terms financially they took over my case. I did notice some red flags right away but didn’t think it would be a problem.
I think “Doc” and his self boasting is more important to him than remembering details of the case, as noted in other reviews below I don’t think they truly care but it defiantly seemed to boil down to money and because I requested payment arrangements my case was less of a priority. In a moment of desperation I made a bad decision to get council from them.

If you disagree with Joanie you better watch out. She will turn on you in a heartbeat, this is what leads me to believe they don’t actually care about the case.... Just about the money! In fact Joanie only returned my calls to discuss payment arrangements and wouldn’t do anything on my behalf for the case... claiming it was too contentious.

It’s my understanding that opposing parties in a child custody case can become contentious but that’s what the Attorneys are supposed to eliminate.

At any rate I would definitely seek a better option especially if you are in desperate need of an attorney in a family law case.

My situation may be different than yours but I wouldn’t suggest this law firm to my worst enemy.

Experienced! Reliable! Caring and compassionate! Doc and Joanie are the best in town! Doc has an incredible amount of wisdom and truly cares about his clients. The Schaefer Law team exceeded my expectations. 'I didn't know what I didn't know' as I entered in to a tough divorce situation but the Schaefers guided and advised me along every step of the way. Wile going through a divorce I had initially hired a different lawyer who failed to file the required paperwork and I panicked I searched for in my area for lawyers and called Schaefer Law, they were amazing right from the start. Everything was detailed and in order all deadlines by the court were meet all appointments were meet, they even ensured court required forms were ordered even though it was the other parties responsibility. They worked with me on a payment plan until I was able to come up with the whole amount. Extremely nice people very caring and friendly. My divorce was the worst experience of my life and I would not have made it through without. Dr. Schafer and his Wife. If you need a good attorney Please call them!

Doc and Joanie have been working with me on and off for around 5 years since the beginning of my divorce. They are always great at keeping me informed and update on the case. They are both caring and competent. They are very fast and efficient. Would highly recommend them!!

We hired him for a child custody/support case. To start, he would frequently forget details of our case. It was obvious some of his paperwork was copy and pasted because reading through it, he would mix up the sex of the client he was writing about, i.e. "she" instead of "he." His paralegal, also his wife, seemed to do most of the leg work. He also frequently made snide remarks about the other party's lawyer, which was completely unprofessional. Finally, on the big day, he needed an hour recess because he was working another case at the same time we were in court! Court took only an hour excluding the recess during which he was phone conferencing another case, and charged us for a full two hours! He came with a list of questions he was going to ask right before we went into court... which did not seem to make any sense and half of which were not even asked, and charged us for that too! During court, he was not even paying attention to what the other lawyer was asking (on either side), was side talking with his paralegal the entire time, and at one point actually left the courtroom. How disrespectful! We had given some evidence to him regarding the other party which only made us look ridiculous in court... I would have thought that after being in practice for so long, he would have known it was senseless to bring it in. This, among other things, seriously questioned his level of competence. No wonder the judge did not rule in our favor. Then when we brought up our concerns afterward, his response was simply that nobody gets what they want and at least the other party didn't get as much money as they anticipated. He must have missed the part about how this was not about money but about the care and safety of a little child! Now we are stuck with a $3k bill after a $1500 retainer. Just unbelievable.
